So before I was a small shop creator I actually was a blogger. I’ve always loved writing and I LOVE writing about fashion. Never thought that would ever take me anywhere and then one day at a college career fair I was browsing trying to hone in on that make it or break it opportunity in a sea of eager college students looking for the same. My best friend already had several high profile internships on her resume and me? I grew up typical suburban family with not a lot but enough and my mom died a week before my college acceptance letter came in and why does that matter? Umm well that meant her income was still accounted for on the financial aid documents and a death certificate meant nothing sooo I was stuck with the good old fashioned you want it? You gotta work for it situation. And although there were some pretty cool internship opportunities floating around I needed a paid situation. I mean what’s the young adult experience if you’re not working 40 hours and taking 15-16 college units at a time. I’d like to personally thank Starbucks and monster energy drinks for whom my degree would not be possible. Sleeping is overrated anyways.
Alas- back to the career fair situation. Although I loved my job during my college years (I worked at Libby Lu in downtown Disney and got to play dress up all day while singing along to Hannah Montana I mean how could you not count your lucky stars.) I also felt I was meant for more than a life of sparkle and synthetic wigs. I had seen devils wears Prada and that was new life goals. But i didn’t live in New York and my knowledge of couture was limited mostly to Juicy. The possibility of that life becoming mine seemed as possible as me becoming the next Hannah Montana. A girl could dream right? And then I was approached- by a blonde guy in jeans who looked like he came from an office near the beach. There were a lot of prominent employers at this career fair- abc was one of them but they had a long line and this guy was standing at a table with no line. Granted everyone knew and gravitated towards the well known companies butsomething told me to stay and listen to this guy. He asked what I wanted to do. My dream opportunity? I wanted to be a fashion editor. As it just so happens he was an editor for a local online publication Orange County.com, affiliated with the OC Register and he was looking for an intern to support their fashion section. Ummmm what?
What are the odds right? So I would spend that summer learning official editorial. I learned to change my tone- as it turns out the style taught in AP English classes isn’t one that resonates well with your everyday media consumer so I had to learn to adapt. I had to also learn photography beyond a digital camera. I had to learn the importance of obtaining a press pass and building media connections. My editor was not at all like Miranda Priestly- quite the opposite actually. I had article goals and needed to be in touch with the fashion culture of Orange County. But that would evolve to be focusing on Roxy and what people wore to the US Open. It was cool- just not my vibe. And my editor picked up on that. Soooo he recommended I take a chance and intern with a colleague of his who owned her own fashion media company. I did that for a minute- it was fun working with Real Housewives and behind the scenes of LA Fashion week- but I really loved writing. Plus that only paid in swag and I had switched employers from Libby Lu to Saks and I was already working to pay for my new addiction to high end fashion. I was a manager at a Saks outlet and it’s easy to fuel that habit when Louboutins are only $300- if you ask my other best friend that’s practically free. So I walked away from that to pursue my own thing and that’s how my first blog was born. Life would evolve professionally and personally and it would be put on the back burner and apparently cease to exist altogether. Apparently Wordpress doesn’t preserve domains which is unfortunate. So I’ve decided to go back to my editorial roots and start adding blog posts here.
I’ll share insights on production, design inspo and behind the scenes challenges of being a mompreneaur. Working around fashion and close to designers and buyers and people of the professional world of fashion i have always been most inspired by the creatives and their journeys of inspiration. Whether it’s the print of curtains in a vintage diner, the sparkle of a season, or a moment in film that’s worth capturing I hope to share that with you guys with this new blog adventure. After all what is the world of fashion if not for one of the most artistic and creative way of storytelling?
